Police arrested a 40 year old Medicine Hat man, Mark Moroney, after a Monday morning cab robbery in which a Deluxe Central Taxi driver was wounded defending against a knife threat. Moroney faces armed robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of a dangerous weapon charges and remains in custody for Thursday court.
Lori-Anne Kloeckes in provincial court pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in a Dec. 17 stabbing of a 41 year old man on Second Street NE. She faces sentencing after a pre-sentence report. a May 31 date was set.
Canadian Press reports Red Deer politician Mary Anne Jablonski will drop the 90 day mandatory treatment portion of her proposed drug treatment bill. The plan now includes only a five day detoxification and assessment period, aimed at youth addicted to crack cocaine and methamphetamine. Alberta Justice officials say the full bill faced court challenges but a judge might approve the five day detox if proven.
Canada West Foundation chief economist Todd Hirsch predicts Alberta GDP growth of 3.7 percent in 2005 and 3.3 percent in 2006. He credits energy strength and other solid sectors as manufacturing grows 15 percent in 2004, housing hits record levels, and exports rise toward 67 billion.

Four people have been charged with first degree murder in the death of 13 year old Nina Louise Courtepatte whose body was found at the Edmonton Springs Resort Golf Course on April 4. The accused are Michael Erin Briscoe 34 from Edmonton Joseph Laboucan 19 from Fort St John BC and two Edmonton youths 17 male and 17 female. They were remanded and await appearance in Stony Plain provincial court.
