The Canadian dollar fell under 87 U.S. cents for the first time since 1933 as New York trading opened, sliding to 86.84 cents by 10:45 a.m. EST amid heavy selling and negative Ottawa economic news, extending a decline from 87.54 cents on Monday.
Energy Minister Brian Peckford told the Newfoundland legislature the province supports exporting Alberta natural gas to the United States to lessen Eastern Canada's oil dependence.
