Ottawa reports the Liberal leader Lester B. Pearson may pursue a permanent House of Commons speaker if he forms a government. Possible candidates include Alan Macnaughton or Lionel Chevrier, with bilingual requirements narrowing choices.
Len Woo 72 proprietor of Blue and White Cleaners at 692 South Railway St was found dead in the rear of his shop after police forced entry. Death given as natural causes no inquest to be held.
Toronto and Detroit played a flat game in a Stanley Cup final, with Toronto winning 4 2 as Detroit struggled to regain form. Rudy Pilous and fans voiced disappointment, while Detroit used physical play to curb Toronto chances in the third period.
Ten Soviet citizens were reportedly executed for Second World War war crimes according to the Soviet defence ministry newspaper Red Star. In other dispatches Gen Albert Henry Belgran says the F 104G Star fighter is not yet operational for interception missions. Laos police chief Col Kanth Siseupanthong was assassinated in his home Friday night. In Jerusalem thousands of Christians traveled to the Holy Land for Easter rites marking the crucifixion burial and resurrection of Christ.
Ottawa reports the service vote adds two seats to the Liberal total, giving Lester Pearson a majority in the Commons with cross-party support from six Quebec Socreds. Hastings South and Pontiac Temiscamingue flip to Liberal, boosting Paul Goulet and Paul Martineau’s margins.
Seventeen people died in four provinces during the start of a three day Easter weekend. Fourteen fatalities occurred in traffic incidents.

Medicine Hat city council will formally commend The NEWS for its campaign to promote Hat industries across the Dominion. Aldermen praised the effort and approved sending a letter of appreciation to The NEWS. The campaign, led by Michael Kriefer and McConnell Eastman Co, Calgary, features four illustrated booklets and four Hat symbols mailed to Canadian advertising agencies.
More than 1,000 nuclear disarmament campaigners clashed with police near London as they invaded a supposed secret civil defence centre. The march from Aldermaston halted for nine hours before protesters breached barriers and moved toward tunnel entrances guarded by police dogs.
Prime Minister Diefenbaker announced his government’s resignation and sent a telegram to Liberal leader Lester Pearson offering to meet Monday to discuss the change. He sought Pearson by phone after learning the armed services vote results but could not reach him. The telegram, released by the prime minister’s office, was dated 11:05 a.m. and expressed congratulations to Pearson on his election victory.
