Ottawa policymakers push Bill C-62 to implement a 7 percent GST set to take effect next Jan. 1 amid a partisan clash in the Commons. opposition protests erupt as the Senate faces approval hurdles and Liberal appointments dominate.
Conservative backbencher Steve Zarusky rejected conflict of interest charges over a land deal in Smoky Lake Alberta noting he sold the land more than a month ago and that allegations undermine his duties.
New Democrat William Roberts was ejected from the Alberta legislature after a fight over a ruling by Speaker David Carter denying debate on extending human rights protections to gays and lesbians. The incident echoed a 1952 removal. Robers walked out as Carter ordered escort from the chamber.
Toronto crowds greeted Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and U.S. President George Bush with boos as they threw out the first pitch at the Toronto Blue Jays home opener. The duo, flanked by Fay Vincent and Bobby Brown, faced chants on a loaded North American political backdrop and discussed East European and Soviet developments.
In Jerusalem the Labor leader Shi mon Peres sees his bid collapsed when ultra orthodox defectors Avraham Verdiger and Eliezer Mizrahi reverse course at the last minute. Parliament weighs extending time for coalition talks as President Herzog considers options.
Edmonton area Agriculture Minister Ernie Isley said the province will not sell Gainers Inc. until Fletcher's Fine Foods Ltd. is unloaded by the Alberta Pork Producers' Development Corp. Two Japanese firms are among prospective buyers. The board bought Fletcher's for 14.7 million in 1984 after the loan default. If no agreement, the province will continue operating Gainers.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney confirms Alberta MPs Alex Kindy and David Kilgour are expelled from the Conservative caucus for opposing the goods and services tax. They will not run again. seating shifts place them with Reform MP Deborah Grey on the opposite side of the Commons. Kilgour denounces Alberta caucus as political thugs.
Canadians expect the economy to worsen with 58 percent predicting decline and 33 percent foresee their finances deteriorating over the next year. The Angus Reid Southam survey of 1,501 adults was conducted March 28 to April 2 and shows widespread concern about higher inflation and interest rates.
