In Ottawa, Finance Minister Ashley denounces what he calls wholly reprehensible spending by businesses incurring unjustifiable costs. He backs retroactive amendments to the Profits Tax to fix inequalities, arguing profits should not shield service members from risk or waste in wartime economy.
Turkish troops man the Bulgarian border as Greeks and Slav forces mount a determined stand in the Vardar valley. Greek front lines report heavy fighting near Rupel Pass and Nevor Kopi with German armored columns. Belgrade bombed, and Skoplje threatened as Berlin claims rapid German progress.
A downtown Edmonton blaze in the Cattistock block killed two people and injured two others. The deceased are Janie S. Moose about 40 and Frances Pollock 60. Injured are Mrs. Sarah Kelly and her daughter Miss Kolly Welly.
London April 8. The Admiralty said Commander Otto Kretschmer, famed Nazi submarine ace, is among 450 prisoners taken from sunken U boats. The communique also claimed British counter-measures against U boats have met with great success.
Edmonton reports the ninth Alberta Legislature session prorogued after Lieutenant Governor Bowen assented to 70 bills, total enactments reaching 123 the highest since 1936. Included is an emergency wheat crop regulation and an act extending mortgage payment terms to May 4, 1943. An opposition move to six month delay a bill granting a waste gas franchise for oil and gas areas failed in the legislature.
Last night aldermen clashed over a motion by Dr J R Patterson and Ald R B Pratt to grant $200 to buy curtain material for living quarters at No 1d S F T S. Proponents argued it aids the war effort while opponents said no city funds should be used for such a purpose. The vote failed 4 to 8 after extended debate. Marshall supported the movers while Warham Black Beil Caller opposed.
Victoria reports Capt. Ernest Forfar Jordan retires as a marine pilot after a 65 year sea career. Born in Liverpool he sailed early with his father on the Algonquin, later serving in the Bering Sea fleet and Yukon river steamers. He fought at Ypres and served in South Africa Mesopotamia and India before returning in 1919.
London reports the RAF unloaded hundreds of tons of high explosives and over 30 000 incendiaries on Kiel and submarine yards in a five hour raid. Attacks also hit Bremerhaven Emden and targets in Denmark and the Low Countries.
Three major gifts push Medicine Hat division toward its quota for the Canadian War Services Fund. Rotary Club contributes 500 dollars, Maple Leaf Milling Co. 200, and local Legion 100, with total receipts reaching 2700 to date. Stone urges canvassers to finish by Saturday. Maple Leaf Milling Co. manager notes 500 dollars voted for the western division, 200 allocated to Medicine Hat. Rotary ladies raise 17.25 at a get together.
The Canadian government links its wheat acreage reduction to supplying more coarse grains for livestock. Three way talks with Canada Britain and the United States aim to prevent rising coarse grain prices while expanding pork production for Britain. Canada now targets 453 million pounds of pork product shipments to Britain this year up from 380 million last year.

London April 8 The Ministry of Home Security announced 4,259 civilians were killed and 5,557 injured in air raids over Britain during March. Casualties included 598 children killed and 413 injured as government urges support for the Canadian War Services Fund seeking 5.5 million dollars to sustain morale and enlistment.
City Treasurer H. J. Noble reported Medicine Hat tax prepayments for the first quarter of 1941 show a $22 770 increase over the prior year. Current tax repayments are the highest since the scheme began and no borrowing on the line of credit has been needed. Sinking fund bonds due March 7 total $40 000 have been provided for and paid. Mayor Hector Lang announced progress on decentralizing Canadian industries and suggested periodic meetings of local business and council committees to promote Medicine Hat as an industrial location. The Council endorsed these steps. The Local Council of Women proposed a curfew for youths under 16 and planned a delegation to discuss it.

Farmington Mississippi reports Earl W. Graser 32 known for the Lone Ranger radio exploits was killed when an automobile struck the rear of a trailer. The accident occurred April 8 and drew wide attention to the famed broadcaster’s death.
