Mulroney touts GST tax edge in election push

Canadians push for Meech vote and court ruling in poll

A Angus Reid-Southam News poll of 1,500 adults shows a majority across Canada and most Quebe cers want a national referendum on Meech Lake and a Supreme Court interpretation of the distinct society clause before ratification. Sixty percent back a court reference and 71 percent favor a referendum, with 59 percent opposed to the accord.

Arson Suspected In Ferry Fire Kills Dozens

A ferry carrying about 500 people caught fire early and hundreds jumped into the North Sea. More than 70 bodies were counted aboard the 10 000 ton Scandinavian Star and 50 to 100 others were unaccounted for. Swedish rescue officials reported 71 bodies and 333 survivors.

Mercury found near Medicine Hat water plant outflow

Testing confirms 2.58 percent mercury in sediment near the Medicine Hat water-treatment plant outflow on the South Saskatchewan River. Samples were analyzed by Loring Laboratories in Calgary. Alberta Environment will report results early next week.
