Prime Minister Diefenbaker addressed 1,400 supporters in Brantford urging Canadians to decide Canada’s future here and now while attacking manufactured crowds. He spoke against powerful interests and called for a campaign by the people for a Canadian vote.
Social Credit leader Thompson predicted a majority for his party in Monday’s vote after Barrie Ontario rally. NDP leader Douglas took part in a Vancouver TV debate with Liberal rival Tom Kent and attended a riding gathering in Burnaby Coquitlam. A politics broadcasting ban began at midnight with leaders set to do little speechmaking.
Demonstrators clashed with pro Creditiste opponents as about 300 students from universities gather in Montreal to denounce the government and the Creditistes. Pushing, shoving, and beatings occurred inside the Forum with students dragged from seats and roughing in the stairways. A Creditiste supporter was seen striking a student during ejection into the street.
Brantford Ontario report says a document claimed to be a letter from American Ambassador Walton Butterworth to Liberal leader Pearson declares the Conservatives unfit to govern Canada. The writer asserts the document exists and is in PC hands.
The text records that both Mr Butterworth and Mr Pearson deny writing a document in question. Butterworth reportedly called Robert Bryce, clerk of the federal cabinet, to state he did not write the letter. Conservatives held the letter for about two weeks and worried about fallout from its use.
