RCMP says two Ontario Conservative MPs used House of Commons funds to pay for their daughters education and forged contracts for personal gain. London Middlesex MP Terry Clifford and Scarborough East MP Bob Hicks allegedly hired each other’s daughters while students and benefited from fake contracts including a $5,000 printer. The affidavit details alleged kickbacks and settlements tied to Clifford’s riding and May, son of the riding association president, with investigations ongoing.
Officials said prisoners still controlled part of a 19th century prison in Manchester England when a convict accused of sex offense died of injuries suffered during riots. About 20 percent of the prison remained uncontrolled as disturbances continued.
Edmonton report says MPs David Kilgour and Alex Kindy were expelled from the Alberta Conservative caucus effective March 20 for opposing the goods and services tax. The two vowed to vote against the third reading of the tax and may have to apologize to lift their suspensions.
Two private researchers found a sample almost solid mercury in river sand 300 metres west of the Trans-Canada Highway bridge near a pipe discharging water into the South Saskatchewan River by the Medicine Hat plant. They collected four samples downstream toward Miners' Flats and up river, noting richer mercury near the outlet and traces of lead in the water. Authorities say the plant uses cooling water from the river and that the river is regularly monitored for mercury.
Premier Clyde Wells said he was horrified by Finance Minister Hubert Kitchen's claim that Newfoundland's stance on Meech Lake was tied to Labrador hydro control. Kitchen called the remark unacceptable and Wells apologized to Quebec Premier Bourassa as hearings on Meech Lake begin in Ottawa with New Brunswick's Frank McKenna slated to testify first.
The U S Senate voted 89 to 11 to strengthen emission controls on factories power plants and cars, promising to halve acid rain causing emissions by 2000. The bill updates the 1977 Clean Air Act ahead of fall elections despite House inaction. Senator Byrd opposed the measure amid a coal miners aid contest.
A Canadian Forces CF-18 fighter jet crashed at 11 a.m. over the air weapons range at CFB Cold Lake in northern Alberta. Capt. Dwayne Steckley said the weather was clear and the pilot, the lone occupant, was unaccounted for.
The Canadian Press reports Agriculture Canada warns farm income will drop by about $2 billion in 1990 due to reduced government support. Even with potential $1 billion in year aid, income may not reach 1989 levels, with Prairies facing the largest shortfalls.
