Finance Minister Sharp ends his bid for the Liberal leadership and urges delegates to unite behind Justice Minister Trudeau. He says his support for Trudeau is unconditional and cites strong delegate backing and Trudeau's broadly based appeal as key reasons for his decision.
Ottawa CP reports Finance Minister Sharp quits race, urges delegates to unite behind Justice Minister Trudeau. Eight rivals scramble as Sharp delegates, numbering under 200, drift to Trudeau side or seek deals. Sharp says his workers will move to Trudeau, who gains momentum as convention opens for Pearson successor.
Southam News reports Liberal delegates received up to six copies of the Canadian Intelligence Digest which vilifies Trudeau as anti conscription and world traveler. The digest, produced by ex Socred Ron Gostick, is seen as far right and anti semitic. Trudeau aides call it smear and say it reveals growing support for him.
A Vietnamese radio translation reports Hanoi ready to meet U.S. representatives to discuss unconditional halting of bombing and other war acts so talks can begin. It notes U.S. bombardment pause except near the DMZ as a push toward negotiations amid Johnson’s peace speech.
U S and South Vietnamese troops launched a relief drive toward the besieged marine base at Khe Sanh amid little resistance. About 8,000 troops advance along National Highway 9 from Ca Lu toward Khe Sanh, with 6,000 Marines and 1,000 South Vietnamese encircled since January by 16,000 to 20,000 North Vietnamese. A Cambodian Navy patrol boat reportedly shot down a U S plane off South Vietnam’s west coast. its 10 crew are missing. The timing follows President Johnson’s bombing curtailment.
Unconfirmed reports from Prague say Jan Bartuska, former Czechoslovak attorney-general, may have died by his own hand. The source could not be verified.
Eugene McCarthy captures 57 percent in Wisconsin, Johnson 35 percent, Kennedy write ins garner 6 percent as Nixon dominates Republican vote with 80 percent. McCarthy leads with 52 delegates to Johnson's eight. Nixon takes all 30 Republican delegates.
U Thant voiced belief that Vietnam peace talks could begin within days of ending bombing and war acts. He criticized North Vietnam's interventionist policy and its aim to partition the country. He noted South Vietnamese resolve to defend national rights as White House officials reviewed Hanoi's statement. The broadcast suggested Hanoi would contact U.S. representatives to decide on unconditional cessation of bombing before talks.
President Johnson held hour long meetings with Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and Senator Robert F. Kennedy in separate sessions. The White House refused to comment, keeping silent on the talks. Kennedy and Humphrey are among possible finalists for the Democratic presidential nomination, along with Senator Eugene J. McCarthy.
