11J. E. Meeker and Miss Della Hagler Married on February r6th.Relatives Follow Up s'Clew Which I.e»«l*-*-»--In InfocoiMnn RnmnnMiss Della Z. Hagler, a well known young lady of this city, surprised her parents last Sunday by producing a marriage certificate as evidence of her marriage to Mr. J. E. Meeker of East St. Louis over four months ago. The admission was the result of inquiries the family concerning letters received from relatives in Missouri asking them if the marriage had not taken place. The sequel leading up to the romance is an interesting one and runs in this wise:Two years ago Mr. J. E. Meeker who was in the employ of the Wiggins Ferry Co., was injured in a railroad accident and was taken to the Henrietta hosiptal at East St. Louis for treatment. Miss Hagler was at that time a nurse at the hospital and the injured man was among those in her charge. Through the daily associations of the two there sprang up a spark of affection which kindled into love and before Mr. Meeker left the hospital their troth was plighted.Miss Hagler afterwards left the hospital and returned to her home in this city. The couple never missed an opportunity of being in each other's company and Mr. Meeker has made many visits to the Hagler home here. At no time was it intimated by either that stronger ties than warm friendship existed between the two and this was taken as an accepted fact.It was early in February when Miss Hagler went to visit relatives in Kansas and Missouri. Arrangements were made with her affianced for a meeting and they were married during her visit at Columbus, Kan,, on February 16th, by Probate Judge Sweeny at that place. This visit was continued but the relatives were not apprised of the wedding and the bride afterwards returned alone to her home in this city.Relatives suspected something, however, and in the interchange of letters matters were discussed. About two weeks ago the Hagler family here received their first information on the affair. Nothing was said of the matter to their daughter at the time but the correspendence on the subject was resumed and additional evidence was secured which strengthened their belief. Last Sunday when Mr. and Mrs. Hagler approached their daughter on the subject she confessed her marriage and produced the marriage certificate as evidence. There was no reprimand from the parents and they accepted the affair as a clever piece of matrimonial strategy.Mr. Meeker is at present at the Hagler home in this city, having come here Thursday. He is a young man of. quiet disposition and temperate habits but practically inacquainted in Troy. His bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Hagler of this city and a native Trojan, She is an attractive and amicable young lady enjoying the friendship and esteem of a host of friends here and has in the past been very successful in her calling as a trained nurse. The couple are at present undecided about their plans in the future, but will probably soon go to make their home at East St. Louis.Bent Her Double.
