Saskatchewan objects to federal gag law on oil firms in Bill C-59
Saskatchewan’s Justice Minister Bronwyn Eyre warns Ottawa’s Fall Economic Statement Implement Act 2023 could force oil and gas companies to prove every sustainability claim under a new Competition Act framework. Activists may swarm complaints, triggering fines up to 10 to 15 million dollars or three percent of gross revenue for advertising or defending the energy sector. Eyre says the bill shifts burden of proof to companies and stifles climate action, while Saskatchewan explores options including the Saskatchewan First Act as Bill C-59 advances to the Senate.
