Isolated Kermadec Islands Home to Castaways and Wildlife
The Kermadecs are described as a remote group between New Zealand and Pacific isles. Early settlers and naturalists visited Curtis and nearby islets, noting scarce fresh water, volcanic terrain, and a makeshift depot roofed with tar. The islands host pohutukawa trees, native birds, and occasional garfish. A New Zealand family once tried to settle, but left after decades. A local incident recounts a girl’s arm injury from a busa fish, highlighting the archipelago’s perilous coastal life.
