Inflation Still Greatest Threat, Laffer Tells Gathering

Kingsley Laffer argues inflation driven by excess demand and high farm prices, not hours or wages. He praises postwar policies but warns 1952 tax cuts risk fueling inflation. He calls for big budget surpluses to curb spending, tighter taxation, and controlled investment to restore balance between employment and production. He notes farm incomes rose sharply since 1939, with export prices fueling wage gains and prices across the economy.

Young farmer acquitted in brief verdict after ten minutes

A jury acquitted Byrnes after a ten minute deliberation in a case heard by Judge Storkey. Lawyers from Tamworth and Manilla represented Byrnes while Crown Prosecutor B F P Telfer presented the case. The report also notes postwar wage and inflation concerns and unemployment trends discussed by Mr. Laffer during a Rotarian meeting.
