At Manilla racecourse the First Improvers Handicap opened with Cub badah misbehaving at the barrier due to wind and a deputy starter officiating. Gipsy Lou led then Memorare finished strong, while Cubbadah later won the Second Improvers Handicap amid close finishes. Eric Flett secured the trainer’s treble as Gipsy Lou and Gambiers Bliss also triumphed.

Manilla Aldermen Election Nomination Details 1953
The Manilla Municipality calls for nominations for seven Aldermen to serve three years from 5 December 1953. Nominations must be by at least two electors and filed by 18 November 1953. If more candidates than seats, a proportional representation vote will occur on 6 December 1953 with consecutive numbers for candidates. The Returning Officer will provide information on nomination procedures qualifications and voting system.

Manilla School sewerage delayed by funding limits
Minister Heffron advised Tamworth MLA that sewerage installation at Manilla Rural School cannot proceed this financial year due to restricted funds for school sewerage schemes. Plans will be prepared for necessary work including upgrading the infant girls’ closet block, with tenders invited when funds permit. The Pang-Cy Association will be kept informed and works will resume as resources allow.

NSW Accident Statistics Show High Year For Accidents
The Superint endent of Motor Transport and Road Accidents in NSW reports 24 982 accidents for year ending 30 June 1953, up 16 from 1952 53 fatalities 663 down 10 5 percent injuries 13 888 down 14 percent. May sees most incidents. 43 percent on straight roads. Human error dominates. failure to yield right of way and inattentive driving most cited. Saturday peaks in incidents. 4 pm to 6 pm busiest. Manowa Shire unique with no accidents in year to 30 June 1953. Manilla shows nine accidents and six casualties in 1962 versus six accidents one death and one casualty in 1961 52.

Milk for School Tender Rejected Over Higher Price
Mr WA Chaffey MLA received a letter from the Education Minister regarding free milk for pupils at Manilla Rural School. The Department will not accept a local vendor tender at 7/0 per gallon, stating this exceeds the district semi wholesale rate. vendors can drop to 6/9 per gallon. The proposal is to be re-processed. Also noted are rising cancer cases in cities, and Grafton beer now supplied to 240 licensees in NSW and Queensland.
