War Rationed Service Signals Patience For Return Helpers
A wartime plea urges readers to endure service gaps as two thirds of key workers serve in the forces. The note asks public patience, explains shortages, and reassures that staff aim to treat customers well while awaiting their colleagues' return.
The Blunt Truth of War Era Commerce and Civic Boards
In wartime Australia Norman Myers, Melbourne and Adelaide Myer Emporium chief, is named an honorary supply adviser amid government contention over his influence. The piece notes Myers expanding stock via forward buying, a bank overdraft reduction, and a past customs overcharge repay plan, alongside Minister W Scully’s wheat financing proposals for farmers and a Manilla Hospital Board meeting approving defence force dependents contributions. It also covers local council concerns about Church Street bridge maintenance and Manilla Agricultural Society talks on annual funding and membership renewals.
