Local Red Cross News Donations Acknowledged And Requests

Donations received since 2 April acknowledged including Mrs F Brooker Mrs Wilshire Mr V A Byrnes and others for sugar books stamps pyjama girdles lamps and linen. Adoption contributions from various street residents total several pounds with further parcels sent to Red Cross Stores including stamps silver paper and comfort items. Requests for more knitted garments and sewing supplies to support welfare efforts are issued citing need for wool patterns and a sewing machine loan.

Election call for hospital directors under Public Hospitals Act

The Hospitals Commission of NAW bids subscribers to enroll for the triennial election of Directors due in August under the Zone contribution scheme. To be eligible a subscriber must have contributed at least ten shillings in the hospital year. Application forms and contribution books must be submitted to Secretary Mr D Wilshire by no later than June 80th.

War in Italy Renewed Battle Near Rapido River Front

After weeks of inactivity the Italy campaign resumes with the Sth Army bridging the Rapido and driving toward the Gustav line. Several villages have fallen as enemy resistance stiffens and casualties rise in the renewed offensives along the frontline.

Obituary of Mr Harry Lane of Gunnedah

Word was received in Manilla on Saturday that Mr. Harry Lane of Gunnedah had died that morning. He lived in Manilla 29 years before moving to Gunnedah, worked in a soft goods shop, joined Stoddart and Co and later Stoddart and Hayward Pty Ltd. In 1929 he took over a clothing business from Mr. George Coffin and ran it since. In Manilla he held public roles, including president of several organisations and work with the Repatriation Committee, serving as secretary of the Send Off and Welcome Home section. A public farewell was held when he left Manilla.

CNDBA finals at Tamworth decide singles and pairs titles

Pryor of Quirindi won the singles championship for the third year running by defeating Dyson of Manilla 31 to 25. Taylor Beas of Tamworth beat Porth and Uperolt of Quirindi 82 to B in the pairs final. Club events and nominations are outlined, with several finals and semi finals scheduled for this week at the Club House. An influx of young visitors from boarding and high schools arrived in Manilla for the school holidays.
