The Presbyterian Womens Guild held their Annual Scots Fair and Flower Show in Memorial Hall last Friday. Despite unsettled weather and a prior long dry spell, the event was highly successful and financially sound with good quality and variety of flowers.
The church fair held with cooking and stalls attracted many entries and strong patronage. Volunteers led by Mrs G S Wheeler provided refreshments. Prizes awarded in the cooking section include chocolate butter cake to Mrs P Adamson and Lamingtons to Miss J Staples. Reverend John Mitchell presented trophies with Rev V C Duncombe speaking.
Arthur George Bell thirty three, inspector of South Brook Maniliz, was kicked by a horse at Tron Bark Creek Barraba yesterday morning while mounting two horses. He fell, hung onto the rein as the horse kicked him, suffering head injuries and loss of his left eye. He was taken to Barraba Hospital then to Tamworth Base Hospital. Doctors operated and removed the eye. condition reported as satisfactory this morning.
About 30 friends and relatives attended a Golden Wedding Anniversary party for Mr and Mrs Jim MacDonald at Memorial Hall Supper Room in Manilla. Guests included four sons, three daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and relatives from Manilla and nearby towns. Messages of congratulations came from Governor of NSW and Prime Minister Menzies.
At the Palais Spencer Tracy Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner headline the MGM thriller Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Friday and Saturday night. Bergman plays Ivy Pearson and Turner is Beatrice Beatrixmor in a rare dramatic turn. Supporting cast includes David Crisp, Tan Hunter, C Aubrey Smith and Barton MacLane.
