Parkes House Explosion Shocks District Residents
A mysterious explosion wrecked a fine two storey home in Parkes last Saturday night scattering debris and shattering windows. Fire followed instantly as detectives and firemen searched the ruins to determine the blast origin. The house, owned by Alderman Lock Mazoudier, cost over £2000 to erect and was unoccupied as Mr Muroudier and family were away in Sydney. The blast at about 10 pm echoed through the district, bricks and woodwork flew, and bricks and glass fragments were hurled up to 150 yards. A nearby political meeting was broken up as hundreds rushed to the scene.

It notes early limitations, the 1867 shift to modern plainclothes detectives after a gunpowder plot, and how Scotland Yard earned fame by the 1890s through high profile cases.
