Wrecked Engine Lifted After Aberdeen Viaduct Crash
The N N engine weighing 75 tons was lifted from the ground after the Brisbane Limited ploughed the Aberdeen viaduct. Two cranes from Newcastle and Werris with a 66 ton capacity aided the operation, one of the railway department’s largest feats in years. The engine was moved to the railway station by five o clock and will head to Sydney. A near accident during lifting prompted a safety review, with clearing work to continue through the week and a relief line to run beside the wreckage. In Ulmarra, the body of Mrs Helen Hilda Caine was recovered after a fall into an old well, with her husband and four children surviving.
