At the last meeting of the Mandowa Shire branch the committee learned a letter from the council proposing to act for primary producers facing hardship when owners are called for military service. Two cases were reported at the Shire President’s house, with arrangements made to handle them without assembling the committee. A ministerial letter promised careful consideration of management of country wheat silos for next season, especially in light of Manilla branch suggestions. The zone shearing issue was reviewed. hardship is common near zone boundaries, including a case where an owner in military service sought July shearing for August lambing. The Manilla district lies in the gore beginning the current shear. Although a July exemption was requested to suit local shearing, permission was refused. Mr A Tow ingold noted shearers are controlled, complicating implementation. A motion praised Mr W Scully’s wheat scheme. Mr Norman Graham, loaned by the Australian Wood Board and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, will stage sheep treatment demonstrations in Manilla on June 15–16 and 7, with venue details to follow.
