Unemployment Tax Challenge Before Court Over Federal Awards
At the Trades Hall the legality of applying the unemployment tax to workers under Federal awards was questioned. Legal advisers said the tax cannot be applied as argued. They noted about 30 percent of NSW workers are under Federal awards and said City Council staff faced unfair treatment since wages earned before the Act’s start were taxed. Town Clerk W G Layton explained the Act taxes money paid on or after July 1, regardless of when earned. Railway shop workers at Chullora and Clyde were said to be taxed for wages earned a fortnight before the Act.
