Rainstorm Drenching Manilla District With Heavy Rainfall

A heavy rainstorm swept over Manilla district on Tuesday evening with very heavy falls recorded at several points. The rainfall continued through the night, with notable totals at Mr. Coselloe’s property and other stations across Bungymulla, Lowrie, and surrounding towns. The deluge brought widespread wet conditions, though the rain is generally welcomed by farmers and residents.

Destruction of Noxious Weeds Inspires Riverfront Action

J Berry, Shire Inspector, urges landowners along the Manilla and Namoi rivers and streams in Mandowa Shire to destroy Noogoora burr and stinkwort. He warns these weeds reduce land and wool values and appeals to owners with river frontage to act now to protect banks and communities.

Manilla ALP Annual Meeting Elects 1944 Officers

The Manilla branch of the ALP held its annual meeting on Sunday January 23. Officers elected for 1944 include President A G Doring Mice Presidents Corcoran and Carlyon Secretary Mahers Treasurer R Austin Returning Officer H Rodgers Auditors J Brady and V Morgan Retiring president C H Abberfield thanked members and declined further office. Matters discussed included overloading passenger trains and alleged black marketing of goods. these will be raised with the district Council on February 6 with delegates from East Tamworth West Tamworth Barraba Attunga Manilla Duri and unions of the Australian Railway), while Federation of Locomotive Drivers plans were noted.

Manilla 16th Annual Ram Sale Ad Draws Buyers

Attention is drawn to the Manilla ram sale on the 11th of February featuring 1 200 high class stud sheep. The dispersal includes 520 magnificent BL studs from Tranquille Gun nedah Algo and over 200 from leading breeders. Southdown, Corriedale and Romney rams of splendid quality will be sold, with only registered studs accepted. Auctioneer W J Byrnes says this will be the best assortment of pure bred sheep before the Northern NSW buying public.

Public meeting to form Repatriation Committee

A public meeting to form a Repatriation Committee will be held Saturday night. Local residents and officials are invited to attend to organize relief and coordinate community support efforts. The gathering aims to establish committee roles and outline immediate actions.

Manilla Council to seek larger water pump and tenders

At the last meeting the Manilla Municipal Council agreed to inquire about a larger water pump to supply the sanitary depot and common. Tenders will be called for an engine and boiler at the depot. The Finance Committee will review back rates and reduce debts. The Mayor reported sewerage piping installation in the main street will proceed. Noxious weed control is underway, with star thistle, Noogoora burr, and Bathurst burr targeted. Ald Wilshire moved council to apply for SOS supply due to refrigerator issues.

Waste paper fuels Australian war munitions drive

An Express item urges Australians to collect waste paper from envelopes, grocery and cigarette cartons to help manufacture rifle cartridges and other munitions. It notes each shot consumes paper, explosive, cartridge, and wad, and promotes repulping and fusing pulp for wartime use in Manila.
