Cr G S R Park has been re elected as President of Mandowa Shire Council for 1952. He succeeded Cr F R Heywood who resigned in July 1951 due to ill health and remains Deputy. The presidential allowance is set at £52 per annum.
Municipal and National Fitness Council run a Play Centre at Rural School from January 2 to 18 open 9 am to 5 pm daily except weekends for all schoolchildren. Thirty five on roll with daily average attendance around sixty. Free milk, crafts, games, hikes, picnics and visits to Tamworth pool and Pow er Station. Supervisors ensure safety and participation. Miss D Fogarty leads, joined by Miss W Thomas and Mr Max Murray. Janice Jenner’s poem celebrates the Play Centre experience.
Pipe bands from Armidale Tamworth Manilla Inverell and nearby towns will greet Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh on arrival in Glen Innes on April 22. A massed band display is approved as part of a two hour royal itinerary attracting thousands from the North and North West. Additional bands from Wallanbarra Stanthorpe and NSW Police Band may join.
Shire Council will offer no objection to closing the local Post Office for lunch due to staff shortages. The decision was made at the last Shire meeting. The Manilla Pipe Band won first prize in the Street Marching competition at the Armidale Highland Gathering held on New Year’s Day.
Late on a minter afternoon a fire destroyed the Keen homestead and contents. John Morris, living 300 yards away, saw the blaze near the telephone area and police suspect lightning struck the wires causing the fire. A nearby motor truck survived. damage runs into thousands. The house was insured.

At the Mandowa Shire Council December meeting they offered no objection to John A Gilbert Proprietary Ltds application for higher Manilla Tamworth bus fares. Published in 1951 final edition the proposed increases show adults singles from 7/6 to 8/9 return from 11/0 to 13/0 children singles from 4/0 to 4/9, from 6/6 to 7/9 and children's weekly tickets from 16/9 to 1.
Mandowa Shire Office at the Council Chambers will close on Saturday mornings starting January Sth to align with the Municipal Council. The decision was made at the last shire meeting to streamline office hours for public business.
Miss Pauline Dawson and Miss Jones Howard of Headquarters Detachment of the Red Grass V.A. assist Mr H Robb who was burnt while tackling bushfires at Terrey Hill. The two helpers provided first aid at the scene.
The 1953 Manila Show schedule is released. Contact Agricultural Society boss Mr. D Hunt in Manila Box 43 by phone for a copy. The show dates are March 21 and 23.
