Fire Devastates Stoddart and Hayward General Store
A Saturday fire at the Stoddart and Hayward general store corner Manilla and Court streets caused extensive damage with stock losses around £16 000 and total damage over £26 000. The office, hardware, showroom, and drapery sections suffered heavy destruction. fire brigade and volunteers contained the blaze after about an hour. The fire’s cause remains unknown. police report no suspicious activity.

Memorial service honors King with town turnout and tributes
A very large crowd from the town and district attended the memorial service for King George VI. Local officials including the Mayor Alderman G Grill and Shire President Dr G S Park joined the Sub-Branch of the RSL and Legion of Ex-Servicemen representatives. Rev W C Duncombe and Rev H J A Emms led the service, with Piper Rawson Weath- playing The Scottish Lament. Emms noted the late king's devotion to duty, illness, and Christian faith, highlighting the monarchy's moral influence and the king's broadcasts. The gathering concluded with God Save the Queen.

The Saturday shoot was the seventh stage of the Swinton Handicap over 600 yards with scores contributing to the Shaw and Ghys aggregates. D H Mortimer and C R Nott posted notable scores. next Saturday offers a practice shoot over 300 yards at 7 30 pm. Gifts of produce and goods will be welcomed at the Parsonage Saturday night and the Sunday School sale follows Monday night.
