The War Agricultural Committee in Manilla has established lasting authority beyond the war, promising heavy powers over harvesting, labour, transport, and rationing. It aims to create a fully centralized production system, enforce community cooperation, and place the committee above private influence to ensure producer equity and national interests.
A bill outlining postwar powers to be delegated from States to the Commonwealth was drafted after Canberra’s Constitutional Convention and will be sent to all State Governments within six weeks. It aims to pave the way for broader federal authority over employment, marketing, company law, trusts, profiteering, production, overseas exchange, air transport, railways, and national health while excluding primary production without Governor in Council approval.
An overseas letter from Cpl. L Park to the Express recounts a trek through New Guinea. He notes dense jungle, narrow paths, and villagers mourning a death as native women cry and a yodel like howl fills the air. He praises native scouts for their aid in reconnaissance while mentioning bleached Jap bones as testimony to combat.
At a Mapilla to Tobar Growers Association meeting held Saturday last a letter from the Australian Tobacco Board secretary announced a Prices Conference would be held in Canberra on December 16 and 17. The board welcomes a Manilla delegate and A R Macleod was named. Much correspondence concerned Benzol supplies for agricultural use, with growers hopeful Benzol will be available within a week of application, improving a prior 10 to 12 week delay.
Manilla bowls in first class condition ahead of season opening on Sunday at 2 30 pm. Due to the president and secretary absent, teams will be chosen by vice presidents C F Hayward and N Scott. All players urged to attend. OWA annual meeting scheduled for Saturday. Local boys Frank Jackson Alan Grantham and Stan Warburton noted. New Guinea praised as poor substitute for Manilla.
