City Discusses Plans for Children’s Pool in River Weir

The Manila Fana Association’s request to remove a tree at the Manila and Charles Streets intersection was denied again by the Municipal Council after prior rejection in July. Alderman Scott found no danger at the corner, while Hall noted danger from wrong side turning. Police proposed a traffic dome. council rejected two positions and favored centering the dome on Charles Street with tar paYing 60 feet of the street.

Petition to Council Seeks right of way from Rowan Street
At Tuesday night’s meeting four ratepayers signed a petition asking the Municipal Council to provide a right of way from Rowan Street Railway Hill through the Railway yards toward Arthur Street. Aldermen opposed a roadway through the yards, the Town Clerk said the matter belongs to the Department of Railways, and signatories will be advised to submit to the Railways Department. The editor later learned the proposal aimed to connect a Housing Commission block road with Arthur Street to the Railway Goods shed.

Damage to Meters Prompt Frost Warning to residents
At a Municipal Council meeting a ratepayer complained about charges for repairing a water meter. The meter was damaged by frost and sent to Sydney for repair. The council warned ratepayers and occupants to cover meters in winter, as damaged meters cannot be repaired locally and must go to Sydney.

Annual Catholic Ball a Social and Financial Success at Memorial Hall
The Catholic Ball drew about 400 attendees on a Tuesday night with ideal weather poor. Miss Pat ONeill of Manilla won Belle of the Ball, receiving a two guinea prize. Mr and Mrs Jim Byrnes were named best dressed couple. Guests included Fathers O Connor Tamworth and Tuttle Barraba. Supper featured poultry, wattle decor, and tables laden with cake. Music by Pavys and Morrisons with Jack Hiscox as MLC kept the dance floor busy. Committee credit goes to Mrs Hirschberg president and Mrs C Miller and others.
