A group of 232 school children accompanied by teacher Mr White attended a council meeting. Mayor Alderman Grill welcomed them and explained the agenda and procedures. He urged protection of public property amid reports of wilful fencing damage at the sanitation depot.
About one hundred parents and citizens visited Manilla Rural School on Tuesday afternoon as part of Education Week. Prefects led tours of classrooms and the Domestic Science and Manual Arts blocks, with teachers available for progress discussions. Deputy Headmaster C V Jackson praised the event as valuable for parent teacher cooperation, noting it as the week’s most important day.
The school runs two levels Primary and Secondary with four houses Peel Macquarie Gwydir and Castlereagh for Primary and Oxley Namoi for Secondary. Weekly competitions in football basketball cricket and vigaro accompany visits from Bar ran Nar narri Tamworth and the Triangular athletics carnival at Manilla with Alec Mack shield on Sept 29. The 5st 7th Primary team excelled, Manilla aims to improve this year, and the school urges parental support to boost student participation and sportsmanship.
At Tuesday night’s council session Alderman C O Ghys left in protest claiming Alderman R M Windeyer dominated remarks on correspondence and related resolutions. Windeyer defended intent to expedite the meeting. the Mayor noted equal speaking opportunity.
The Municipal Council agreed to offer a 10 pound reward for information leading to convictions for vandalism to council property. Between 5 pm July 28 and 10 am July 29 the Garbage and Sanitary depot fence suffered seven cuts and nine steel posts were bent. Myr. Roberts reported no arrests. The mayor called it a disgrace and noted recurring property damage. Vandals also removed many house number plates.
The North Cricket Association holds its annual meeting at the Royal Hotel in Manilla on Sunday 22 August at 11 am. Delegates from eight centres Tamworth Gunnedah Boggabri Narrabri Quirindi Barraba Moree and Manilla attend. President R Wotton and Secretary J Longmuir of Gunnedah chair discussions on upcoming season competitions and arrangements for the NSW Sheffield Shield match against the N W C C eleven at Gunnedah.
Fashion show advertised for September 18 at Memorial Hall Manilla from 2 30 pm promises an outstanding display with five or six models anticipated for the event.
Miss Margaret Lindsay Thompson to host as renowned Woman's Day social figure. Nequins arrive from Sydney for a show. tickets priced at 6d each include afternoon tea.
