Woolclassers Strike Talks By Graziers In 1930 31
The Industrial Arbitration Act canceled the em ployment award for woolclassers in 1979. In 1930 the Graziers' Association and Woolclassers' Association held sessions seeking a new agreement. Proposals urged 10 percent wage cuts and second class fare payments, but negotiations stalled until May when a 10 percent rate cut was agreed. The Woolclassers' Association only agreed to conference on May 14. Historical rates show woolclassing pay rose from 22/6 per 1000 in 1910 to 33/ per 1000 for 25 000 sheep in 1930, with current season rates around 31/6 and 27 per 1000 for grown sheep and lambs. The Sydney wool value fluctuated from 8d to about 6d per lb after war and exchange effects.
