Lower Grades Of Wheat Needed To Help Farmers
An agriculture consultant urged Canada to grow lower grade wheat to boost farmers earnings. Hedlin of Winnipeg said high quality wheat demand is shrinking and shifting to softer wheats could raise yields and farm income. Reman noted fertilizer’s role in a 1967 prairie wheat crop and Manitoba researchers highlighted Manitou wheat’s drought resistance as a key factor in wider planting.

A preliminary estimate by the board of grain commissioners places this year’s prairie wheat protein at a notably higher level than the 1966 average. Based on 2200 samples, No. 1 and No. 2 northern grades show strong content, with Alberta samples limited but Saskatchewan and western regions contributing, while frost and moisture shortages affect grade No. 3 and No. 4 wheat.
