Consumer Protection Bill Questioned By Banks
The Manitoba proposed consumer protection bill drew constitutional questions from D A Thompson representing the Canadian Bankers Association. He argued under the British North America Act federal jurisdiction over banks may be infringed as the bill would force banks to reveal credit transactions upon government request. Banks see no special privilege but warn the measure changes their status and subjects them to creditor laws.
