Farmers urged to keep straw for soil health and yields
Extension experts say straw should be incorporated rather than burned to save about 2.25 per acre in lost nitrogen. Proper harvest handling, trash cover, and use of a chopper or harrows protect soil, reduce erosion, and support next year's crop while feeding livestock. Controlling thistles at harvest through fall spraying and shallow cultivation prevents regrowth and preserves clean fields for the future.
