B C Salmon Fleet Shrinks Under Canadian Limitation Plan
British Columbia's commercial salmon fleet has been reduced by 571 vessels under the year old restriction scheme. The Pacific region office of the federal fisheries department reports the fleet now totals 3,977 vessels, with 5,844 in category A, 1,003 in B and 100 in C. Category A boats land at least 1,200 dollars worth of salmon or 10,000 pounds of pink salmon. B boats land less. Despite the drop in vessels, the fleet's net worth rose to 95,558,000 from 87,195,000 in 1968, as new licence fee proposals set minimums and tiered charges based on vessel registration and value.
