Allan liner Heserian attacked by submarine near Ireland
The Allan liner Heserian bound from Liverpool to Montreal was hit by a German submarine on Saturday night off the Irish coast. With 350 passengers and 300 crew aboard, thirteen passengers and four crew members died. The ship did not sink until 6:45 the next morning as the captain and a volunteer rescue crew struggled to bring the crippled vessel toward Queenstown. The ship settled by the head overnight, the decks then awash, and the captain and crew remained aboard to try to reach safety.
