Wildlife Act Violations Lead to Fines and Citations
Herman G Woods of the Long Plains Indian Reserve pleaded guilty to having a loaded firearm in an automobile under the Wildlife Act. RCMP reported duck hunting complaints on May 16 and observed Woods attempting to unload a .22 semi automatic rifle in the back seat. Woods was fined 20 dollars and his gun released. Ormand Edward Burke pleaded guilty to impaired driving after a swerving 1969 Pontiac on August 17. He was fined 200 dollars and lost driving privileges. Hugh R Moran pleaded guilty to failure to stop at a truck inspection station after driving past near Emerson. the truck passed inspection, Moran was reprimanded.

Court sentences 11 months for eight charges
Frank Linn Harris an 18 year old of no fixed address pled guilty to eight charges including four counts of motor vehicle theft two licence plate thefts theft of two gallons of gasoline and a dangerous driving charge. He was sentenced to 11 months in Headingley Correctional Institute after judge B P McDonald found probation and treatment unlikely. Crown prosecutor Rex A Gilroy argued Harris unable to function in society. Defence noted need for individual treatment and supervision and blamed lack of attention at Manitoba Home for Boys. The judge emphasized public safety and that probation cannot help those unwilling to be helped.

Winnipeg man refuses breathalyzer test on highway
Edward Barisoff, 47, of Winnipeg, faced a charge of refusing a breathalyzer after RCMP found him asleep in a car on the Trans-Canada highway two miles east of Portage la Prairie on July 4. He told court he slept while a friend drove and lost his keys. Judge MacDonald fined him 200 dollars and revoked driving privileges.

Poplar Point Horticultural Society held its 38th Annual Flower and Vegetable Show on August 24. Winners include Best Gladioli Mrs. W England, Best Rose Mrs. F Lier, and aggregate awards for Flower and Vegetable went to Mrs. F Lier.
