Wooden water main still in use since 1904 shocks city
Portage Alderman A R Barrett reports a wooden water main dating to about 1904 was found while fixing a break on Main Street North. The line, previously thought to be cast iron, has leaked for years and was quietly bypassed. Normal and then above normal service returns after repairs. The city estimates about ten percent more water produced with ten percent lower costs. Investigations into vandalism at the Assiniboine pumping station are underway after a break in.
