Fall rye boosts soil protection and cold tolerance in Manitoba
Agricultural reports from HM BARNSLEY describe fall sown rye as a erosion control crop on sandier lands unsuited for wheat or barley. Seeding in late August or early September at about one bushel per acre, with winter hardiness emphasized, favors Dakold and Antelope varieties. European types like Sangaste and Petkus show higher yields under good conditions but poorer winter survival. Manitoba tests recorded Antelope 94, Dakold 90, Sangaste 63, Petkus 60 percent winter survival, guiding farmers to choose Dakold or Antelope for reliable yields amid harsh winters.
