Rail abandonment near Brandon opposed by Manitoba government
A Canada Trains Council study proposing abandonment of 270 of 880 miles around Brandon to save over 8 million in grain collection faced opposition from Manitoba officials. The area north of Brandon, from Portage la Prairie to Saskatchewan, supported 120 grain elevators serving 5,650 producers delivering 284 million bushels in 1972. The report found nine systems insufficient to cover life costs, with consolidation lowering total system costs but raising producer and municipal costs while speeding reductions in railway expenses.
