Ducks Still Linger On the Prairies
Ducks Unlimited Canada reports isolated southward movements but many ducks still linger on the prairie. Fall populations are as strong as last year with blue winged teal green wings and widgeon mostly moved on while shovelers remain plentiful in Saskatchewan. Pintails thin after large fall numbers, mallards feed on stubble and may form spectacular concentrations after a hard freeze. A southward move followed a cold snap in Edmonton area and western Alberta, while Alberta sees record mallard numbers east of Edmonton. In British Columbia drought pushed birds to coastal marshes and in the Maritimes geese moved in with ducks plentiful. blacks and green winged teal are abundant.
