Rural Mail Delivery to Stay Six Days in Canada
Ottawa announces rural postal service will run six days a week, offsetting a planned five day urban delivery start February 1. Postmaster General Eric Kierans says Saturday service will be dropped in cities with low demand while rural Saturday delivery continues where demand is strong. The move, made during the second reading of a rate bill, addresses rural hardship and supports social justice, despite protests over higher rates and reduced service. The post office has not posted a yearly profit since 1956-57, with losses projected at 10 million for 1968-69 and 130 million for 1967-70. Kierans asserts equal government service as key alongside user pays.
