Miller Wins Portage By Election for Progressive Conservatives
Cal Miller, Portage born lawyer, led the Progressive Conservatives to a 559 vote victory over Liberal Progressive challenger Jaffray Wood with Sidney Coulthard of the CCF in a Portage by election. Miller secured a 75 vote rural majority and carried the city with 4,911 to Wood 4,032 and Coulthard 2,807. Total turnout was 11,211 of 16,800. Miller overturned the 1,865 Liberal majority from 1945 and benefited from a late rural shift and party turnout. Election night featured loud celebrations along Saskatchewan Avenue as results poured in with officials announcing the final tallies.
