Urges Public Defender Be Appointed
Winnipeg city council last week urged the appointment of a public defender for the under privileged in Winni magistrate's court. Alderman Lloyd Stinson, former CCF leader, argued a publicly paid lawyer would speed court work and protect indigents and law abiders in trouble with the law. The Manitoba Law Society provides defence lawyers free for indigents in indictable cases, but timing delays remain.

Gravel Pit Yields No More Fossils Near Edmonton
A gravel pit two miles east of Edmonton, long an abundant fossil source, may be exhausted. Geologist L A Bayrock of the Research Council Alberta says the site has produced remains of sabre-toothed cats, woolly mammoths, an extinct North American horse, and a giant bison, dating back 8 000 to 12 000 years. The sabre-toothed Smilodon known as Old Smily was found years ago by A C Morrison and later given to the council.
