Manitoba Grasshoppers Feature At 4 H Meeting
The 4 H Mix and Match club held its first business meeting at 8 00 on Sept 26 in the Collegiate with 22 members and several parents present. New officers are Donna Vermuelen president Sharon McRae vice president Wilma Wright treasurer Debbie Hodge and Shannah Heselwood club reporter. Members chose groups for the year and discussed recruiting leaders. Manitoba grasshoppers were shown alongside Japanese grasshoppers to compare size and flavor. Ryoshoku Mr Makino's company processes over half of Japan s grasshoppers and may seek Manitoba supply to cut costs. Grasshoppers are boiled or blanched then cooked in soya sauce and sugar preserving 1 2 years. Mr Makino aims to mass produce and plans to import raw materials from Manitoba. Harvesting is done by high school students in early fall with about 400 grasshoppers per pound and a daily wage around 30 cents per pound. The harvest runs mid September to mid October with peak near the end of September. In Japan a pound costs 3 80 Canadian, while the potential raw product would fetch 1 000 to 1 500 per ton. Officials from West Man Corporation toured Makino and see supply issues due to pesticides and the need to establish a dependable system, possibly using hopper dozers and freezing facilities. Manitoba producers may benefit if this market expands, though expansion is not immediate.
