Farmers Would Be Hard Hit If Rail Lines Are Abandoned
Manitoba lawyers warn abandonment of 16 branch lines by Canada’s two major railways would raise grain delivery costs to 1,750,000 dollars annually from 600,000. The cost per bushel would jump to 8.25 cents, and average farmer haul would rise to 180 dollars from 60. About 100 points serving 10,000 Manitoba farmers move 22 million bushels yearly. Farm values could fall by an average 2,000 dollars per farm, with potential market value loss over 20 million dollars.
