Central Plains honors longtime lay minister John Henry Smith
Despite hardship and few facilities, John Henry Smith, born 1905 in Bonnie Doon near Lake Francis, became a fisher, lodge operator, and steadfast lay minister. He filled in for ministers across Portage Winnipeg Jackson and helped run Bethel Church, later canvassing for the Anglican and undenominational faiths, and led Canvas Back Lodge since 1944. He and his wife raised five children, one son Gale lost in a 1968 highway crash, and he remains active in church service and community life today.
