Perennial Hay and Pasture Crops for Manitoba
Wes Henderson Ag Rep notes few cultivated perennial hay and pasture crops perform well in Manitoba. Alfalfa and grasses such as brome crested wheat intermediate wheat and Russian wild rye are best as grass–alfalfa mixtures. Pasture yields reach 0.90 tons per acre in two years with grasses and 1.40 tons for hay. mixtures with Ladak alfalfa increase pasture yields to 2.75 tons. Specific yields include Russian wild ryegrass 1.20 tons pasture, intermediate wheatgrass 1.65 tons hay, crested wheatgrass with alfalfa 3.00 tons pasture, and 2.69 tons for crested wheatgrass with alfalfa or intermediate wheatgrass with alfalfa. For dry/sloped soils nine pounds of forested wheatgrass and two pounds alfalfa per acre recommended. hay seeding favors three to four pounds alfalfa and seven to eight pounds crested wheatgrass. In moister areas brome can replace crested wheatgrass in mixtures with alfalfa. Slender wheatgrass is short-lived but usable for three to four years with alfalfa where moisture is favorable. Intermediate wheatgrass and Russian wild ryegrass show promise for hay and pasture.
