Wheat Yield in 1935 Districts Shows Wide Variation
Wheat yields across Prairie districts in 1935 varied greatly due to rust and frost. Overall crops were reduced from 30–50 bushels to as low as 5 in some areas, with eastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba hardest hit by rust. An estimated 109 million bushels were lost to rust, while Southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba south of the CPR showed strong potential when rainfall was adequate. Reward wheat outperformed Marquis Garnet Red Bobs and Ceres under favorable conditions.

Rust resistant wheat holds up under infection in trials
Thatcher wheat from Minnesota and rust resistant varieties from the Dominion Rust Research Laboratory, Winnipeg, resisted rust with no appreciable yield or grade damage. Early sowing fared better than late, and eastern Saskatchewan and much of Manitoba still face uncertain security until robust rust resistance is available.

Rusted wheat used as seed due to rust epidemic
Wheat rust forces prairie farmers to seed with damaged grain. Germination tests show weak seedlings though many kernels can sprout. field conditions may kill them. Rusted seed risks root rots and disease, so avoid formalin and use copper carbonate or approved dusting materials.
