Manitoba Ends Compulsory Vegetable Marketing Plan
Agriculture Minister Harry Enns announced Manitoba will end compulsory marketing of all vegetables pending cabinet approval to remove potatoes from the Manitoba Vegetable Marketing Commission. A producer body failed to replace the government operation, leaving the commission to market vegetables on a voluntary basis while adjustments are made. A meeting between the Manitoba marketing board and the commission was organized to establish a new format and ensure Winnipeg facilities remain open. The minister noted 60 percent of provincial production is sent to the Winnipeg facilities built for the industry and said the commission will operate until orderly changes are completed.
