Treasury chief C. M. Drury stated that fewer than 5,000 public service jobs will be laid off in the drive to curb spending. He noted 19,000 positions have already been eliminated through not filling vacancies, voluntary departures, and retirements. The aim is a 25,000 reduction outlined by Prime Minister Trudeau, with remaining vacancies filled by those losing jobs. The prior strength of the service was 236,736.
