Wheat crop grading slips as frost and weather hurt yields
M. J. Conacher, chief grain inspector for the Board of Grain Commissioners, said the 1964 prairie wheat crop mainly grades No. 3 Northern, a shift from typical two Northern dominance. About 39 percent of red wheat will be No. 4 Northern or lower and 16 percent No. 5 to feed. Frost caused dark green kernels, plus harvest weather worsened mildew and sprouting, with durum barley and rapeseed also downgraded. A Madison Sask sample showed 63 percent sprouted kernels.
