Premier defends sales tax amid Manitoba labor push
Premier Schreyer told a news conference that abolishing the provincial five percent sales tax is out of the question. He warned that speeding up drug, dental care, and pension programs could raise taxes, and argued eliminating the tax would require regressive measures or cuts to municipal grants. He noted a $100 million shift from regressive to progressive taxation over four years. If labor calls for faster social programs, a two percent sales tax rise could follow.

Manitoba Farm Bureau asked the Manitoba Highway Traffic and Motor Transport Board to reject the Manitoba Trucking Association’s request for a five percent PSV rate rise and a thirty cent minimum charge.
